Learning Activity

Students will locate an immigrant that they would like to interview.  They will create five or more questions that they would like to ask that person about their life in another country and here in America.  They will conduct an oral interview with that person.  Students will write a report about that person and their experiences based on the information they gathered. Students need to apply the conventions of writing.  Students will give an presentation with an oral report.  They may show any items that their interviewed person loaned them from their home country.  Students will be quiet and attentive while other students are doing their presentation. They will then post their report on the Writers Bulletin Board.  After their presentation, the students will write a reflection to describe how they feel their interview and presentation went.

Instructional Method

The teacher will model how to write questions to gather information from someone on the board.  The class will give 5 questions, the teacher will explain what is and is not an appropriate question. The teacher will conduct a mock interview with a student using the questions the class decided on.  Teacher will clearly explain the rubric and expectations of the report.  Teacher will give a mock presentation of the interview with the student. Teacher will have the students give their reports, listening for fluency and presentation skills, while grading from a rubric.  Teacher will explain reflections and demonstrate a reflection over the mock interview.
