Assessment Activity

Students will be assessed:

1.  Use the Multisyllabic Words Spelling Practice pages 81-84 to show that the student can spell and use words that are multisyllabic.

2.  Use the Unusual Spellings Spelling Practice pages 85-88 to show that the student can spell and use words with unusual spellings.

3.  Use the Greek Word Parts Spelling Practice pages 89-92 to show that the student can spell and use words with Greek word parts.

4.  Use the Latin Roots Spelling Practice pages 93-96 to show that the student can spell and use words with Latin roots.

5.  Use the Related Words Spelling Practice pages 97-100 to show that the student can spell and use words that are related to each other.


  The students will take a weekly Post test, including writing dictation sentences, to show that the student is able to use the learned concepts to correctly spell words from the selections.

The students will take an end-of-unit 5 Benchmark test to show that the student is able to use the learned concepts to correctly spell words from the selections.

Learning Activity

1.  Multisyllabic Words ( The Three-Century Woman )
  • Students will complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 81-82.
  • Students will take a pretest over the weekly word list.
  • Students will work in pairs to research the spelling words on the computer and then use them in a sentence.
  • During independent practice, students will apply learned concepts in spelling while completing Spelling Practice Book pages 83-84.

2. Unusual Spellings ( The Wreck of the Titanic )

  • Students will complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 85-86.
  • Students will take a pretest over the weekly word list.
  • Students will use personal dry erase boards to practice writing the words.
  • During independent practice, students will apply learned concepts in spelling while completing Spelling Practice Book pages 87-88.

3.  Greek Word Parts ( Talk with an Astronaut )

  • Students will complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 89-90.
  • Students will take a pretest over the weekly word list.
  • Students will work in pairs to write the word parts onto cards and then match the parts together to make the list word.
  • During independent practice, students will apply learned concepts in spelling while completing Spelling Practice Book pages 91-92.

4.  Latin Roots ( Journey to the Center of the Earth )

  • Students will complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 93-94.
  • Students will take a pretest over the weekly word list.
  • During independent practice, students will apply learned concepts in spelling while completing Spelling Practice Book pages 95-96.

5. Related Words ( Ghost Towns of the American West )

  • Students will complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 97-98.
  • Students will take a pretest over the weekly word list.
  • Students will work in pairs and write down as many words that they can make using the root word of each spelling list word. 
  • During independent practice, students will apply learned concepts in spelling while completing Spelling Practice Book pages 99-100.

Instructional Method

During Instruction the teacher will:

1. Multisyllabic Words:
  • Use prepared lesson materials to teach/model spelling and using words that are multisyllabic.
  • Assist the students, during guided practice, using the SmartBoard to complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 81 and 82. 
  • Guide and assist students, when needed, as they complete the research/computer activity.
  • Observe and assist students that are having difficulties during independent assignments.
2. Words with Unusual Spellings:
  • Use prepared lesson materials to introduce, teach/model spelling words that have unusual spellings and do not follow any phonics rules.
  • Assist the students, during guided practice, using the SmartBoard to complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 85 and 86. 
  • Guide and assist students, when needed, as they practice making words on the dry erase boards.
  • Observe and assist students that are having difficulties during independent assignments.
3.   Greek Word Parts (Talk with an Astronaut ) : 
  • Use prepared lesson materials to introduce, teach/model how to spell and use words with Greek word parts.
  • Assist the students, during guided practice, using the SmartBoard to complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 69 and 70. 
  • Guide and assist students, when needed, as they participate in theword matching game activity.
  • Observe and assist students that are having difficulties during independent assignments.
4. Latin Roots ( Journey to the Center of the Earth ):
  • Use prepared lesson materials to introduce, teach/model how to spell and use words that have Latin Roots.
  • Assist the students, during guided practice, using the SmartBoard to complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 93 and 94.
  • Observe and assist students that are having difficulties during independent assignments.
5. Related Words ( Ghost Towns of the American West )
  • Use prepared lesson materials to introduce, teach/model spelling and using words that are related to each other.
  • Assist the students, during guided practice, using the SmartBoard to complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 97 and 98. 
  • Guide and assist students, when needed, as they make their word list in pairs.
  • Observe and assist students that are having difficulties during independent assignments.

Correction Exercise

Students will write the spelling words 5 times each.

Enrichment Exercise

Students will work in centers and cooperative groups activities weekly for each learned concept.

Students will work in pairs to practice their spelling words.

Special Needs

Special needs will be addressed during small group instruction and in one-on-one meetings with teacher.  Special needs will be addressed by pairing students with a "Buddy" partner.
