Students will be assessed:

  1. Using the Digraphs spelling Practice pages 21-24 to show the student can identify, spell and use words with digraphs th, sh, ch and ph.
  2. Using the Irregular Plurals spelling practice pages 25-28 to show the student can identify, spell and use words with irregular plurals in writing.
  3. Using the r- Controlled Vowel spelling practice pages 29-32 to show the student can identify, spell, and use words with r- controlled vowels in writing.
  4. Using spelling practice pages 33-36 to show the student can identify, spell and use words with final syllables -en, -an, -el, -le, -il in writing.
  5. Using the spelling practice pages 37-40 to show the student can identify, spell and use words with final syllables er, ar and or in writing.
  6. Using a Spelling Posttest with Dictation sentences, to show that the student is able to use the learned concepts to  correctly spell words from the selections.

Learning Activity

  1. Diagraphs th, sh, ch, ph (Inside Out)
    • Students will work in pairs to make missing letter cards with given word list.  They will remove the digraphs from the words, replacing them with lines.  Then, they will trade cards and fill in the missing letters to complete the word cards. 
    • Using weekly concepts, during guided practice, students will complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 21 and 22. 
    • Using weekly concepts, during whole group instruction, when given a word by the teacher, the students will repronounce the word, then use and spell the word correctly in a sentence on the SMART Board.
    • During independent practice, students will apply learned concepts in Spelling while completing weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 23 and 24.
  2. Irregular Plurals (Passage to Freedom)
    • Students will work in pairs discussing a given list of words.  Then, they will administer a pretest to one another. After completing both pretests, they will correct their partners paper and discuss any mistakes.
    • Using weekly concepts, during guided practice, students will complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 25 and 26. 
    • Using weekly concepts, during whole group instruction, using note cards with list words, students will sort and categorize the weekly words, according to how the plural was formed.
    • During independent practice, students will apply learned concepts in Spelling while completing weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 27 and 28.
  3. Vowel Sounds Controlled with r (The Ch'i-lin Purse)
    • Students will work in pairs to give each other sound and meaning clues for the list words.  (ex. Which word has ore and is something you do when you sleep?) 
    • Using weekly concepts, during guided practice, students will complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 29 and 30. 
    • Using weekly concepts, during whole group instruction, the students will use at least six list words to write about a true event that appeared in the news. When finished, they will trade with a partner and edit the paragraphs for spelling and grammar mistakes.  Then, they will share with the class.
    • During independent practice, students will apply learned concepts in Spelling while completing weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 31 and 32.
  4. Final Syllables -en, -an, -el, -le, -il (Jane Goodall's 10 Ways to Help Save Wildlife)
    • Students will be given a list of twenty words, working in pairs, they will take turns reading and spelling the list words.  The reader will read a word and spell all but the last two letters.  The other partner will finish spelling the word and say it again..
    • Using weekly concepts, during guided practice, students will complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 33 and 34. 
    • Using weekly concepts, during whole group instruction, students will draw a note card from the basket.  They will reveal what they have drawn (en, an, el, le or il).  Then, he/she will have to name and spll a word that ends with the letters on the card. The teacher may have the student to write the word under the correct final syllable on the SMART Board.
    • During independent practice, students will apply learned concepts in Spelling while completing weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 35 and 36.
  5. Final Syllables er, ar, or (The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere)
    • In order to help memorize the spelling of words with these endings, students will make colored coded word cards. They will write the list words, highlight the final syllables, and then, using a different colored card for each ending er, ar, and or, they will write the words on cards.  When finished, they can practice pronouncing and spelling the words with a partner.
    • Using weekly concepts, during guided practice, students will complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 37 and 38. 
    • Using weekly concepts, during whole group instruction, the students will participate in a class spelling game. The students will divide into groups, and compete against one another to see which group can be first to spell and categorize the words correctly.
    • During independent practice, students will apply learned concepts in Spelling while completing weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 39 and 40.

    During Instruction the teacher will:

    1. Digraphs th, sh, ch, ph
    • Use prepared lesson materials to teach/model identifying, spelling, and using words that have digraphs th, sh, ch, and ph. Guide and assist students during the cooperative learning activities.
    • Assist the students, during guided practice, using the SmartBoard to complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 21 and 22. 
    • Guide and assist students, when needed, as they participate in the Missing Letters activity.
    • Observe and assist students that are having difficulties during independent assignments.
    2. Irregular Plurals
    • Use prepared lesson materials to introduce, teach/model identifying, spelling and using words that are irregular plurals. Guide and assist students during the cooperative learning activities.
    • Assist the students, during guided practice, using the SmartBoard to complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 25 and 26. 
    • Guide and assist students, when needed, as they participate in the sorting activity.
    • Observe and assist students that are having difficulties during independent assignments.
    3. Vowels Sounds with r
    • Use prepared lesson materials to introduce, teach/model how to identify, spell, and use words that have vowels that are controlled by an r. Guide and assist students during the cooperative learning activities. 
    • Guide and assist students, when needed, as they participate in the Guess My Word activity.
    • Assist the students, during guided practice, using the SmartBoard to complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 29 and 30. 
    • Guide and assist students, when needed, while writing and peer editing their true event paragraphs.
    • Observe and assist students that are having difficulties during independent assignments.
    4. Final Syllables -en, -an, -el, -le, il
    • Use prepared lesson materials to introduce, teach/model how to identify, spell, and use words that have similar ending sounds that use different final syllables. Guide and assist students during the cooperative learning activities.
    • Assist the students, during guided practice, using the SmartBoard to complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 33 and 34. 
    • Guide and assist students, when needed, as they participate in the Finish the Word activity.
    • Observe and assist students that are having difficulties during independent assignments.
