Spelling - The Unexpected

Local Objective

At the completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

Story:  At the Beach
Identify and spell suffixes -ous, -sion, -ion, -ation.
 
Story: The Mystery of Saint Matthew Island
Identify and spell words with final syllable -ant, -ent, -ance, -ence.

Story:  King Midas and The Golden Touch
Identify and spell words with ei and ie.

Story: The Hindenburg
Identify and spell compound words.
 
Story: Sweet Music in Harlem 
Identify and spell easily confused words.

Assessment Activity

Students will be assessed:

1.  Use the Suffixes -ous, -sion, -ion, -ation Spelling Practice pages 101-104 to show that the student can spell and use words with these suffixes in writing.
2.  Use the Final Syllable -ant, -ent, -ance, -ence Spelling Practice pages 105-108 to show that the student can spell and use words with these final syllables in writing.
3.  Use the Words with ei and ie Spelling Practice pages 109-112 to show that the student can spell and use words with ei and ie in writing.
4.  Use the Compound Words Spelling Practice pages 113-116 to show that the student can spell and use compound words in writing.
5.  Use the Easily Confused Spelling Practice pages 117-120 to show that the student can spell and use easily confused words in writing.


  The students will take a Post test, including writing dictation sentences, to sho that the student is able to use the learned concepts to correctly spell words from the selections.

The students will take an end-of-unit 6  Benchmark test to show that the student is able to use the learned concepts to correctly spell words from the selections.

Learning Activity

1.  Sufffixes -ous, -sion, -ion, -ation ( At the Beach ):

  • Students will complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 101-102.
  • Students will take a pretest over the weekly word list.
  • Students will work in pairs to research the spelling words on the computer and then use them in a sentence.
  • During independent practice, students will apply learned concepts in spelling while completing Spelling Practice Book pages 103-104.

2. Final Syllable -ant, -ent, -ance, -ence ( The Mystery of Saint Matthew Island ):

  • Students will complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 105-106.
  • Students will take a pretest over the weekly word list.
  • Students will use personal dry erase boards to practice making words using the learned final syllables.
  • During independent practice, students will apply learned concepts in spelling while completing Spelling Practice Book pages 107-108.

3.  Words with ei and ie ( King Midas and the Golden Touch ):

  • Students will complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 109-110.
  • Students will take a pretest over the weekly word list.
  • Students will work in groups to write the words onto dry erase boards in a peer-given pre-spelling test review..
  • During independent practice, students will apply learned concepts in spelling while completing Spelling Practice Book pages 111-112.

4.  Compound Words ( The Hindenburg ):

  • Students will complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 113-114.
  • Students will take a pretest over the weekly word list.
  • During independent practice, students will apply learned concepts in spelling while completing Spelling Practice Book pages 115-116.

5. Easily Confused Words ( Sweet Music in Harlem ):

  • Students will complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 117-118 .
  • Students will take a pretest over the weekly word list.
  • During independent practice, students will apply learned concepts in spelling while completing Spelling Practice Book pages 119-120.

Instructional Method

During Instruction the teacher will:

1. Sufffixes -ous, -sion, -ion, -ation ( At the Beach ):
  • Use prepared lesson materials to teach/model spelling and using words with Sufffixes -ous, -sion, -ion, -ation.
  • Assist the students, during guided practice, using the SmartBoard to complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 101 and 102. 
  • Guide and assist students, when needed, as they complete the research/computer activity.
  • Observe and assist students that are having difficulties during independent assignments.
2. Final Syllable -ant, -ent, -ance, -ence ( The Mystery of Saint Matthew Island ):
  • Use prepared lesson materials to introduce, teach/model spelling and using Final Syllable -ant, -ent, -ance, -ence.
  • Assist the students, during guided practice, using the SmartBoard to complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 105 and 106. 
  • Guide and assist students, when needed, as they practice making words on the dry erase boards.
  • Observe and assist students that are having difficulties during independent assignments.

  • Use prepared lesson materials to introduce, teach/model how to spell and use words with  Final Syllable -ant, -ent, -ance, -ence. 
  • Assist the students, during guided practice, using the SmartBoard to complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 109 and 110. 
  • Guide and assist students, when needed, as they participate in the dry erase activity.
  • Observe and assist students that are having difficulties during independent assignments.
4. Compound Words ( The Hindenburg ):
  • Use prepared lesson materials to introduce, teach/model how to spell Compound Words.
  • Assist the students, during guided practice, using the SmartBoard to complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 113 and 114.  
  • Observe and assist students that are having difficulties during independent assignments.
5.  Easily Confused Words ( Sweet Music in Harlem ):
  • Use prepared lesson materials to introduce, teach/model spelling and using Easily Confused Words.
  • Assist the students, during guided practice, using the SmartBoard to complete weekly Spelling Practice Book pages 117 and 118. 
  • Observe and assist students that are having difficulties during independent assignments.

Correction Exercise

Students will write the spelling words 5 times each.

Enrichment Exercise

Students will work in centers and cooperative groups activities weekly for each learned concept.

Students will work in pairs to practice their spelling words.

Special Needs

Special needs will be addressed during small group instruction and in one-on-one meetings with teacher.  Special needs will be addressed by pairing students with a "Buddy" partner.
