Assessment Activity

Students will be assessed:

  1. Using the 1-1 Place Value Quick Check and Practice  worksheets to show the student can write the standard, expanded and word forms of whole numbers in billions and identify the value of digits in whole numbers.
  2. Using the 1-2 Comparing and Ordering Whole Numbers Quick Check and Practice  worksheets to show the student can compare and order whole numbers through billions.
  3. Using the 1-3 Decimal Place Value Quick Check and Practice worksheets to show that the student can write decimals in expanded, standard and word form through millionths.
  4. Using the 1-4 Comparing and Ordering Decimals Quick Check and Practice worksheets to show the student can compare and order decimals through thousandths.
  5. Using the Topic 1 Numeration Multiple Choice Exam to show students can:

Learning Activity

During whole group instruction, students will:
  1. Take notes from the SMART Board, follow along as the teacher works example problems, working out the problems on their slates, and then work guided practice questions on writing the standard, expanded and word forms of whole numbers in billions and identifying the value of digits in whole numbers.
  2. Take notes from the SMART Board, follow along as the teacher works example problems, working out the problems on their slates, and then work guided practice questions on comparing and ordering whole numbers through billions. Students will participate in a game to see who can compare and order whole numbers correctly the quickest.
  3. Take notes from the SMART Board, follow along as the teacher works example problems, working out the problems on their slates, and then work guided practice questions on writing decimals in expanded, standard and word form through millionths.
  4. Take notes from the SMART Board, follow along as the teacher works example problems, working out the problems on their slates, and then work guided practice questions on comparing and ordering decimals through thousandths. Students will use their laptop computers to play a comparing and ordering decimals game at the following website:  http://cemc2.math.uwaterloo.ca/mathfrog/english/kidz/orderdecimal6.shtml
During independent work time, students will complete the:
  1. 1-1 Place Value Quick Check and Practice worksheet.
  2. 1-2 Comparing and Ordering Whole Numbers Quick Check and Practice worksheet.
  3. 1-3 Decimal Place Value Quick Check and Practice worksheet.
  4. 1-4,  Comparing and Ordering Decimals Quick Check and Practice worksheet.

At the end of each unit, the students will use their computers to play a review game over that topic by going to the Mind Point Quiz Bowl icon on their computer.

Instructional Method

During whole group instruction, the teacher will:
  1. Display the Visual Learning Animations CD-ROM on the SMART Board, use prepared lesson materials to discuss, model examples and provide guided practice problems, providing assistance and feedback as needed on Place Value.
  2. Display the Visual Learning Animations CD-ROM on the SMART Board, use prepared lesson materials to discuss, model examples and provide guided practice problems, providing assistance and feedback as needed on Comparing and Ordering Whole Numbers.  Guide students at the dry erase board as they compete in a game to compare two whole numbers correctly and quickest.
  3. Display the Visual Learning Animations CD-ROM on the SMART Board, use prepared lesson materials to discuss, model examples and provide guided practice problems, providing assistance and feedback as needed on writing decimals in expanded, standard and word form through millionths.
  4. Display the Visual Learning Animations CD-ROM on the SMART Board, use prepared lesson materials to discuss, model examples and provide guided practice problems, providing assistance and feedback as needed to Compare and order decimals through thousandths. Instruct students to go to the following website, http://cemc2.math.uwaterloo.ca/mathfrog/english/kidz/orderdecimal6.shtml, giving technological help as needed.

While students are completing independent practice problems, the teacher will observe and assist students that are having difficulties.
