Instructional Method

During whole group and guided instruction, the teacher will:

Story:  Westlandia
Introduce the lesson vocabulary with students.  Discuss the meaning of the words after students have completed partner work.   Discuss different suffixes and their meanings with the students, explaining how -ed, -ing, and -s change the meaning of verbs.  Review the vocabulary words and definitions as they are put into the vocabulary wall chart.

Story:  Stretching Ourselves
Using index cards, write each of the vocabulary words on a card and each of the definitions. Pass these cards out randomly to the students, reading the definition cards.  Call on a student with the vocabulary word and have the students try to guess the definition that matches it.  Explain that context clues do not always work for determining meaning, a dictionary may sometimes need to be used.  Review the vocabulary words and definitions as they are put into the vocabulary wall chart.

Story:  Exploding Ants
The students will read their vocabulary definition predictions and tell what context clues they used to help them determine the meaning.  Make a 2-column chart on the board and write the vocabulary words in the left column.  Ask for students to give you as many synonyms as they can think of for each word and write them in the right column.  Review the vocabulary words and definitions as they are put into the vocabulary wall chart.

Story:  Stormi Giovanni Club
Introduce the lesson vocabulary with students.  Call on students to tell me what context clues they used to help them determine the meaning of the vocabulary word.  Ask students questions that include the vocabulary words, this will help clarify the words' meanings. Model and explain how to use the glossary or dictionary for words they they cannot define in context.  Review the vocabulary words and definitions as they are put into the vocabulary wall chart.

Story:  The Gymnast
Introduce the lesson vocabulary with students.  Create a word rating chart on the board from Teacher's Edition page 486b.  Ask students questions about the suffixes used in the vocabulary words.  Explain how the suffix changes the meaning of  the word.    Review the vocabulary words and definitions as they are put into the vocabulary wall chart.

The teacher will explain directions for and discuss given assignments.  While students are completing independent assignments, the teacher will observe and assist students having difficulties.
