Instructional Method

During whole group and guided instruction, the teacher will:

Story:  The Three-Century Woman
Introduce the lesson vocabulary with students.  Discuss the meaning of the words after students have completed partner work.   Explain and discuss how using word structure and finding root words within a larger word can help you determine word meaning.  Review the vocabulary words and definitions as they are put into the vocabulary wall chart.

Story:  The Unsinkable Wreck of the R.M.S. Titanic
Using index cards, write each of the vocabulary words on a card and each of the definitions. Pass these cards out randomly to the students, reading the definition cards.  Call on a student with the vocabulary word and have the students try to guess the definition that matches it.  Explain that context clues do not always work for determining meaning, a dictionary may sometimes need to be used. Model how to use the glossary and a dictionary determine the meaning of the word debris.   Review the vocabulary words and definitions as they are put into the vocabulary wall chart.

Story:  Talk with an Astronaut
Introduce the vocabulary words, asking students to tell what they think the definition means.  Discuss and explain that some words have multiple-meanings and how to use context clues to determine the meaning of these words.  Review the vocabulary words and definitions as they are put into the vocabulary wall chart.

Story:  Journey to the Center of the Earth
Introduce the lesson vocabulary with students.  Call on students to tell me what context clues they used to help them determine the meaning of the vocabulary word. Create a 3-column synonym-antonym chart on the board.  Write the vocabulary word in the first column. Ask students to tell you a synonym for that word and write it in the second column.  Have students to tell you an antonym for the vocabulary word and write it in the third column.  Review the vocabulary words and definitions as they are put into the vocabulary wall chart.

Story:  Ghost Towns of the American West
Introduce the lesson vocabulary with students.  Explain how a prefix added at the beginning of a base word has a meaning of its own and changes the meaning of  the base word.    Review the vocabulary words and definitions as they are put into the vocabulary wall chart.

The teacher will explain directions for and discuss given assignments.  While students are completing independent assignments, the teacher will observe and assist students having difficulties.
