Instructional Method

During whole group and guided instruction, the teacher will:

Story:  At the Beach
Introduce the lesson vocabulary with students.  Discuss the meaning of the words after students have completed partner work.   Explain that context clues do not always work for determining meaning, a dictionary may sometimes need to used. Model looking up the vocabulary word driftwood in a dictionary and a glossary.  Review the vocabulary words and definitions as they are put into the vocabulary wall chart.

Story:  The Mystery of Saint Matthew Island
Using index cards, write each of the vocabulary words on a card and each of the definitions. Pass these cards out randomly to the students, reading the definition cards.  Call on a student with the vocabulary word and have the students try to guess the definition that matches it.  Review the vocabulary words and definitions as they are put into the vocabulary wall chart.

Story: King Midas and the Golden Touch
Give the students clues related to the definition of the words and have them guess which vocabulary word matches the definition.  Explain and discuss how word structure and suffixes added to a base word help to understand the meaning of a word. Review the vocabulary words and definitions as they are put into the vocabulary wall chart.

Story:  The Hindenburg
Introduce the lesson vocabulary with students.  Call on students to tell me what context clues they used to help them determine the meaning of the vocabulary word.  Ask students questions that include the vocabulary words, this will help clarify the words' meanings.  Review the vocabulary words and definitions as they are put into the vocabulary wall chart.

Story:  Sweet Music in Harlem
Introduce the lesson vocabulary with students.  Discuss homographs and ask students to give definitions for the vocabulary words.  Explain that these words have different meanings but are spelled the same.  Have students to tell other words they know that are homographs.    Review the vocabulary words and definitions as they are put into the vocabulary wall chart.

The teacher will explain directions for and discuss given assignments.  While students are completing independent assignments, the teacher will observe and assist students having difficulties.
